Salvaging the Auraura After Storm Amy

Case Study

The Challenge

The primary challenge arose when the yacht named Auraura sank off the Largs seafront during Storm Amy. The incident occurred on a Saturday morning, with the vessel submerging to the point where only its mast remained visible above the waves. This sudden sinking posed immediate risks to navigation and the environment, necessitating a swift and effective salvage operation to prevent further damage or hazards in the busy coastal area.

JWA’s Solution

To address the submersion, the recovery team utilized specialized equipment from JW Automarine, a provider of marine salvage solutions. The key component of their solution was the deployment of one-tonne float bags, which were inflated underwater to lift and stabilize the yacht. These heavy-duty lift bags enabled the vessel to be raised from the seabed, allowing it to be towed to a nearby slipway and repositioned on a sandy patch for further assessment and trailering. This approach facilitated a controlled and efficient refloating process without requiring extensive external contracting.

The Challenges Faced

Several obstacles complicated the recovery effort. Initial quotes for professional salvage services reached £12,000, creating a financial barrier for the boat owner and local volunteers. To overcome this, the operation was handled in-house with support from partners, reducing costs significantly. Additional challenges included working against tidal cycles—the team had to wait for the tide to recede before pumping out water and refloating the yacht using a £600 salvage pump donated by the owner. The operation extended into the early hours, concluding around 2am, which added logistical strain due to darkness and fatigue. Despite these hurdles, the volunteer-led effort, involving divers and local yacht club members, ensured the yacht was safely recovered without major incidents.

The Location

The incident and subsequent recovery took place off the Largs seafront in Scotland, specifically in front of Mackerston—a prominent landmark along the coast. The yacht sank near Largs beach, a popular area for boating and recreation, which heightened the urgency of the operation due to its proximity to public spaces and potential impact on local tourism and safety.
