Power Plant Turnkey Project

Case Study

The Challenge:

Power plant facility required maintenance on faulty equipment as repair and replacement required specific load testing requirements. Unfortunately, not enough hook height was available for traditional rigging of waterbags.

JWA’s Solution:

A lifting beam was required to rig 8 x 35te waterbags in order to achieve the desired test load of 312.5 Tons (625,000lbs). Coordinated heavy lifting beam to safely control testing, checking, and handling equipment in the most safe and controlled manner ensuring proper function of capabilities.

Challenges Faced:

Crane to be tested was located in the bottom of a mountain where the generating turbines are located.  This involved transporting all equipment, including two flatbed trailers with the lifting beam components down into the mountain on the road going from the entrance to the bottom of the mountain on the turbine floor.  Additional obstacle was finding the correct size lifting beam that would fit within the available dimensions.  JWA partnered with a rental company located in Louisianna for the correct engineering assessment and ultimately the correct lifting beam. Maneuvering large equipment info underground facility took coordination from multiple technicians to achieve required functionality and certification.

Location:

Southeastern United States. Specifically, at an underground pumped storage hydroelectric generating station just outside of Chattanooga, TN.
